Legend by Marie Lu

     Taking place in yet another dystopian setting, but instead of slowly building up to a reveal that the world that the characters live in is corrupt and unsafe, it becomes apparent that this world isn't a Utopia after all very quickly. Taking place in the future, in a world where success is based upon your "Trial", or a test of the mental and physical prowess. The higher the score, the better your life will be. This book focuses on two main characters, Day and June, two very contrasted characters. Day is a runaway, and Public Enemy No. 1, and June is hailed for the one and only perfect score on the Trial. Day was raised in a poor and unsafe suburb, and June was born into a rich and well respected family. Day is on the run from the military, and June works for them. Matched with the corruption of the government, there is also a plague ravaging the lower class that Day must battle to save his family. And when these opposing forces eventually cross paths in the worst way possible, bad things can happen.

       When I was browsing the shelves of classroom and I came across this book, that I have read before, and decided to do a reread. In my opinion, this book is... Ok. I mean, I really like dystopian books, and some of my favorites are Unwind and Scythe by Neal Shusterman, but Legend by Marie Lu, it's kind of basic and formulaic.  For example, a snobby rich kid and a poor kid that's seen it all, who have been raised in completely different environments, cross paths and lead to a learning experience for the both of them. In the end, they learn not to be so judgemental. I'm not saying that that is how it ends, but it really seems to be structured that way. Even though this book is a little predictable, I still found it very entertaining with the wild action scenes and twists and turns. Altogether, I would rate this book 7/10

    Nice review, this book sounds pretty fun even if it seems somewhat generic. I like the formula of a book following two different stories that eventually clash, I might check this book out.

    Hi Connor, I remember reading this book in 7th grade. Although looking back on the book now it doesn't seem that good to me, it was nice remembering the book and 7th grade year.

    Hi Connor, I haven't read this book before, but I have read other dystopian books. I tend to stay away from them because of the predictable plot. This seems like another example of why I choose to read other genres. Nice review!

    This book sounds very familiar to me. The plot that you summarized feels similar to a movie or book I've seen but I don't remember the name of it. All I remember was that it was very amusing to me and perhaps I might like this book as well.

    This is a great book review! This book review is great and I feel like I've read this book even though I haven't. I have read other types of books with similar and predictable plots, I might have to read this book.

  Keeper of the Lost Cities  - Shannon Messenger, entire series *Spoiler warnings* I’m not talking about book one, book two, or book three. I’m talking about the whole nine-book incomplete series. I firmly believe that it is really good (although maybe just after the first few books). Once you get back Sophie Foster's god complex, or rather get used to it, the rest of the series allows you to pretend the side characters are the main characters. Sophie is an elf with superpowers, who after spending the first twelve years of her life in the human world (and reading the dictionary for fun at age five), gets introduced to the elf world.                It was a Monday. I had ELA next period and had forgotten to bring a book to school, so at the end of lunch period I ended up in the library. Just like Ok, I have two minutes, grab a book and go . I saw a familiar name, but with a title of a book I’ve never read, so I grabbed the book and got going. Challenger Deep by Neal Shusherman . Forty-five minutes later, after reading the first sixty pages of the book, the words that came out of my mouth were, “This book sucks''. And following up with that, “It makes no sense. Why does it have to jump from scene to scene every two minutes! Like is this whatever boat pirate ship thingy the character is on half the time even real?”.
